Two boys venture into the space/time continuum to rescue a prized first edition Superman comic.
Twelve-year-old Brian will never forget the day, when he was seven, that he accidentally spilled a cup of punch on his father's valuable copy of a Superman #1 comic book from 1939. He is certain that his cheerful, joking father secretly despises him for ruining this prized possession. Like his father, Brian collects comic books, so it is not surprising when Mr. Somerset, the owner of the General , gives one to Brian. What is surprising, however, is that the comic book is full of blank panels and that a metal ring falls into Brian's lap. Brian thinks that there must be some kind of mistake. Why would anyone want to buy a blank comic book?
Paul, Brian's best friend, activates the ring, sets the date to 75 million B.C., and then presses a button labeled "Timequest." The boys suddenly find themselves in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean battling a prehistoric beast. This wet adventure becomes the first of many "Timequests" -- both to the past and to the future. During their travels, they escape from 1939 to find themselves in the prehistoric past where they get caught in a battle between a mastodon and a pack of dire wolves. They warp away just in time, but one problem leads to another. When they finally make their way back home they find that though they have been changed by their adventures, home is comfortably the same ... or is it?

I don't usually read a book where I wish I could take a pencil and add more. For a first book, Adam Osterweil has a great strong plot, but there was not any details or imagery. It was as if he couldn't keep me on a tight leash. Having a short attention spand made it hard to read this book. I think younger kids in second and third grade will enjoy this book. For older though, this book was not made for us. If a little more detail was added "The Comic Book Kid" would be a better book.Brian and Paul discover a comic book they receive from the owner of the local general store, Mr.Somerset, is blank. The comic book titled "Time Quest", came with two chips, a ring, and instructions. The comic turned out to be a device used to travel forward or backward in time. Brian got an idea to travel back in time and get a Superman #1 comic, that he ruined. With accidentally bringing one person from 1939 to 2001, his existance is almost erased. The summary of the book drew me in, but the book let me down. The author was as plain as Cheerio's with his descriptiveness.
If it wasn't for stopping and looking at Craig Smith's Illustrations, I wouldn't know what was going on in this book. I was in the year 2499 and went to the year 99,999 and couldn't get apicture of the story. If you, like me have a short attention spand you won't make it out of chapter one. I wish the author put another ten percent into his details.

The Comic Book Kid Adam Osterweil Craig Smith 9781608980925 Books Reviews
I read also the Amulet of Kommondor by the author. This book is cool but Amulet was better. I like how they do all these funny things to try to save the rare comic. Its an adventure and you have to read to the end to see if they save the comic.
Adam Osterweil is my teacher for english and even before i was in his class i read this book. i have read all of his books so far and i loved them too. every time one of his books came out i would walk to his classroom and asked him to sign it and every time he says yes. he even signed my "The Comic Book Kid" twice. i think that it is a wonderful book it was fun to read and un-like some books i have read you get captured inside of the book. this book is exciting and funny. this book is from a kids point of view, because, Adam Osterweil being my teacher and all, i have goten to know him and he is really a big kid, a little smarter then kids and likes school a lot more than most kids, but none the less a big kid. i am also going to be a charicter in his next book he hasn't told me a lot about it but from what he has told me i think its going to be great.
...this is still my favorite book because it has a time machine and I wish I could build a time machine or something like it or somebody would come to me from the future. The book was very interesting and I didn't want to put it down. My favorite part was when the old woman flapped her arms and everyone laughed.
Mr.O is a former seventh grade teacher of mine for english. I read his book when it first came out, and it was really good. The book is written the way he thinks. He is an adult with a little kid's heart. I think kids between the ages of 7-13 will enjoy this book. Don't listen to the negative reviews because this book is great.
I read this book because its up for best adventure book in the disney adventures awards. Its neat because it only took me three hours to read. I usually read 25 pages an hour and this book is 150 pages so it goes fast. Theres no place to put it down and go get a drink because its all adventure. I'm going to vote for it. Read this book if you want to go an action packed journey to get an old comic book.
Do you watch the Antiques Roadshow? Do you collect anything of value? As all collectors know, there's always that one rare item that seems unattainable, that you dream about finding in a dusty attic or a remote yard sale. This book explores the exciting possibility of fulfilling that dream for comic collectors. The main character, a serious comic buff, acquires a time travel ring, and plans to go back in time with his friend to get a mint condition copy of the first Superman comic (now worth over $100,000.) The reader is left in suspense throughout the entire book, wondering if they will succeed or not, as their plan unravels into a full-fledged adventure through time and space.
This book is funny, fast moving, and never dull. I discovered it through my son's Disney Adventures magazine, where it was nominated for best adventure book of 2001. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. My son's read it twice already.
If you or your children want a break from the fantasy genre that seems to be dominating readership now, this clever sci-fi/adventure is for you.
I've read all of Osterweil's three books and I have to say I like this the least, probably because I enjoy fantasy better than sci-fi. The Lost Treasure of Talus Scree is awesome because it fully takes place in a fantasy world, and The Amulet of Komondor is bearable because of the Japanimation part. This, however, doesn't interest me very much.
I do appreciate Osterweil's arbitrary sense of humor, especially because he also makes fun of himself. Although I've never been personally taught by him, I think I'd like to see him sometimes. Hey, maybe the next time I go to New York. D
